US rock and roll legend Chuck Berry has announced a new album, 38 years since the release of his 1979 studio album “Rock It”. Celebrating his 90th birthday, the iconic artist announced that the new album would be called ‘Chuck’ and would be “comprised primarily of new, original song”.
The album is due for release in 2017 and was recorded in “various studios around St Louis,” with Berry as the album’s sole producer.
In a statement Berry said: “I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!”
Berry has dedicated the record to his beloved wife of 68 years, Thermetta “Toddy” Berry. Two of their children, Charles Berry Jr and Ingrid Berry have also been involved in the creation of the album and can be heard playing instruments on various tracks alongside veteran members of Berry’s hometown backing group bass player Jimmy Marsala and pianist Robert Lohr.
Berry Jr mentioned that the new tracks “cover the spectrum from hard-driving rockers to soulful, thought-provoking time capsules of a life’s work.”
Berry’s impressive career has spanned seven decades and has produced countless hits such as Johnny B Goode and Roll Over Beethoven. The rock and roll legend received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1984 and was brought into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two years later.
Paul Roper of Dualtone Records said: “It is a great honour to be a part of this record and the broader legacy of Chuck Berry. This body of work stands with the best of his career and will further cement Chuck as one of the greatest icons of rock and roll.”
Chuck Berry’s new album, ‘Chuck,’ will be released next year. The album will consist mainly of originals. A final track listing will be released at a later date.
